Active learning in Public Relations: role-playing simulations and games for education, training, and research

[Aprendizaje activo en Relaciones Públicas: simulaciones y juegos para educación, entrenamiento e investigación]

Paper presented at the BCN PR Meeting #7 Critical Intersections: Communication, public relations, and beyond in a time of  convergence.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is discussing simulation/gaming and other active learning methodologies for enhancing the learning experience of PR students and the continuing education of practitioners and stakeholders. The paper explores the relevant active learning literature in order to identify theories and best practices and their applicability to the field of PR and related disciplines. The paper assumes that, simulations and games should play a critical role in providing an education/training framework for interacting and engaging with other participants while being exposed to key PR concepts, topics and issues, and then reflect on their experience for learning outcomes. It highlights the importance of conducting debriefing sessions to facilitate reflection on critical issues associated with the PR practice by participants and thus producing knowledge. The use of simulations as a research instrument is also explored. It argues that simulations and serious games can be used to test strategic communication decisions, early detect problems, and identify issues.
